We hope all of the mothers out there had a lovely Mother’s Day! Speaking of mothers, we receive a lot of questions from mothers about what they should wear to their child’s wedding. Here’s a Q&A to answer a few common asked questions.
Where should I shop for my dress?
If time is no issue, you could order a dress from the bridesmaid/evening wear section of a bridal salon. This is an increasingly popular choice since there are so many different styles, fabrics, and colours available. If you go with this option, you will have the freedom to choose any colour from the designer’s palette. The mall is also a great place to find a dress. Stores like Laura’s, The Bay, Melanie Lynn, and Anthropologie are a great place to start.
When should I purchase my dress?
If you’re planning to order a dress from a salon you want to give yourself 4-6 months. That way you’ll have enough time for the dress to be made, sent, and tailored if necessary. If you are planning to purchase from the mall, you do not need to find a dress as early. If the wedding is not until the summer, don’t get discouraged if you cannot find anything suitable until spring. The style of dresses will change seasonally, so don’t worry if you need to wait until a little closer to the event to find the right dress.
Should my dress match the bridesmaid’s dresses?
Typically, mother of the bride & groom dresses do not match the bridesmaids, but it should complement them. Before you purchase a dress, consult the bride. She may have colour or length in mind.
Should the mother-of-the-bride and mother of the groom match?
Again, consult the bride before you shop. The mother’s dresses are not usually the same dress, but they will often complement each other. They may be the same colour, the same length, or similar styles. If the bride is indifferent, it never hurts to consult each other
How much say should the bride have in my dress?
You will definitely want to consult the bride about colour, and she may also have preferences on length and style. Try to work with her and respect her wishes as much as you can, but it’s also important for you to feel comfortable in what you’ll be wearing. Ideally, we want you both to be happy.
